How much does a crawl space vapor barrier cost?
A vapor barrier project can be a relatively simple ground-cover installation or part of a much larger moisture-control system. That difference is why two bids can look very different even when both use the phrase “vapor barrier.”
What changes the scope
- Square footage: more exposed ground and wall area means more material and labor.
- Material thickness: heavier reinforced liners generally cost more than basic polyethylene.
- Sealing details: taped seams, piers, posts and wall transitions add labor.
- Access: low clearance, tight entries, ducts and plumbing can slow installation.
- Cleanup: debris, wet insulation or old plastic may need removal before new material goes down.
Vapor barrier versus encapsulation

Do not ignore standing water

Questions to ask before approving the bid
- What material thickness and reinforcement are included?
- Will the liner cover only the ground or also the walls?
- How are seams, posts and penetrations sealed?
- Is old material and debris removal included?
- Is drainage or dehumidification being proposed separately?
Structural damage is a different project
If moisture has already damaged joists, beams, sill plates or supports, ask for that repair to be priced separately. A vapor barrier can help manage moisture but does not restore damaged structural wood.
